A detainee was wounded after attempting to escape from authorities while being escor*ted in Pandan, Catanduanes, prompting an investigation into the incident, police said.

According to a report aired on “Unang Balita” on Wednesday, the detainee was scheduled to be brought to the Office of the Provincial Prosecutor in the town of Virac on Monday for a preliminary investigation related to his case.

Police said the situation escalated shortly after the escor*t began when the detainee suddenly grabbed the bag of one of the escor*ting officers and ran away. Authorities immediately chased after him as he attempted to flee the area.

During the pursuit, police fired at the detainee, hitting him in the knee. Despite being wounded, the detainee reportedly continued trying to escape. Authorities eventually caught up with him and placed him back in custody.

The detainee was later taken to a hospital to receive medical treatment for his injury.

Meanwhile, the police officer who fired the shot was placed under investigation to determine whether proper procedures were followed during the incident.

Aside from his existing case related to illegal dru*gs, the detainee is set to face additional charges for resistance and disobedience to a person in authority. Police said the filing of the new complaints is part of standard procedure following the attempted escape.

Authorities noted that the detainee did not issue any statement regarding the incident. Further details surrounding the circumstances of the escape attempt and the police response are expected to be clarified once the investigation is completed.

In other developments, a long-serving teacher identified as Agnes Buenaflor of Pedro E. Diaz High School collapsed and later died after losing consciousness during a formal classroom observation on January 7, 2026. The 58-year-old educator was given immediate first aid and rushed to a nearby hospital, but she passed away hours later following the incident, which occurred in the presence of her students and evaluators. In the wake of her death, the Teachers’ Dignity Coalition and other labor organizations urged the Department of Education to review what they described as “oppressive” performance assessment systems that may be adding to teachers’ workplace stress. Officials from DepEd Muntinlupa expressed deep sorrow over the loss of what they called a cherished mentor and said an investigation is underway to clarify the circumstances and extend assistance to the bereaved family.
