College student killed, brother hurt after motorcycle plunged into ravine

A college student was killed while his brother was injured after their motorcycle plunged into a ravine in the early hours of January 18, 2026, in Bontoc, Mountain Province.

The fatality was identified as a criminology student, while his brother, who was driving the motorcycle, sustained injuries and was taken for medical treatment. Both siblings are residents of Dalimuno, Bantay, Tabuk City, Kalinga.

According to the Bontoc Municipal Police Station, the accident occurred at around 2:30 a.m. at Sitio Dantay, Barangay Alab Oriente.

Initial findings showed that the two were traveling from Barangay Bontoc Ili toward Dantay when the motorcycle overshot a curved portion of the road.

The vehicle then plunged off the roadside and into a ravine.

Police responders who arrived at the scene discovered the student trapped between bamboo trees about five meters below the road.

Rescue efforts were immediately conducted, but the victim was later declared dead. His remains were brought to the Bontoc General Hospital morgue for proper handling and documentation.

The injured brother was also rescued from the crash site and rushed to a medical facility for treatment.

Authorities did not immediately release details regarding the extent of his injuries, but confirmed that he survived the incident.

Local police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident to determine possible contributing factors, including road conditions and visibility at the time of the crash.

They also reminded motorists, especially those traveling at night, to exercise caution when navigating curved and mountainous roads, as such areas pose increased risks for accidents.

In other news, a seasoned educator identified as Agnes Buenaflor of Pedro E. Diaz High School collapsed and later died after losing consciousness during a formal classroom evaluation on January 7, 2026. The 58-year-old teacher was given immediate first aid and rushed to a nearby hospital, but she passed away a few hours later following the incident, which unfolded in front of her students and evaluators. In response, the Teachers’ Dignity Coalition and other labor groups urged the Department of Education to review what they described as “oppressive” performance monitoring systems that may heighten workplace stress. DepEd Muntinlupa officials expressed deep sorrow over the loss of what they called a “cherished mentor” and said an investigation is underway to clarify the circumstances and extend assistance to the grieving family.
