The suspect’s arrest was triggered by a critical mistake during his escape. He reportedly dropped his identification card, which the victim recovered.
The victim later used a tracking application connected to the stolen phone through a laptop, allowing authorities to pinpoint its location.
PLt. Col. Zachary Capellan, station commander of QCPD Station 10, explained how the tracking led them straight to the suspect.
“Nalaglag nito yung ID niya, then napulot ito ng biktima… Itong biktima umuwi ng bahay at in-open yung kanyang laptop at doon naka-connect yung cellphone niya,” says Capellan.
Police confirmed that the tracked location matched the address indicated on the suspect’s ID.
During the operation, officers recovered the cellphone and discovered an improvised firearm inside the suspect’s residence.
Investigators also found that the suspect had only been released in 2024 after serving eight years in prison for illegal possession of firearms.
He also has previous records involving theft and illegal dru*gs.
The suspect admitted to committing the crime, claiming he needed money to pay rent after his motorcycle, which he uses for work, broke down.
He now faces charges of theft and violation of the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act.
Meanwhile, police continue their follow-up operation to arrest the motorcycle driver who acted as the suspect’s getaway rider.
An earlier KAMI report covered a deadly shooting that claimed the lives of three members of a family inside their own store in Barangay Mallorca, San Leonardo, Nueva Ecija. Authorities said CCTV footage showed three men entering the shop, closing the roll-up door, and opening fire on the victims until all three were killed. Before fleeing, one of the suspects allegedly took a bag and a cellphone belonging to the family. TV5 Frontline Pilipinas correspondent Gary De Leon reported that the victims had reportedly been receiving threats prior to the attack after lending ₱1 million to a fellow barangay resident, who allegedly used the money to start a business.
In another separate incident that later went viral, a 51-year-old public school teacher in Las Piñas City was killed after being stabbed multiple times by her husband. According to a report by EJ Gomez on Unang Balita, the suspect, who is 38 years old, allegedly carried out the attack inside the school’s faculty room.
