The shooting occurred on January 9 and involved a police sergeant assigned to the Sibulan Police Station.

In a press briefing on Monday, Philippine National Police spokesperson PBGen. Randulf Tuaño said the suspect claimed he felt targeted by his fellow officers.

“Merong mga report na parang pinagkakaisahan siya ng mga kasamahan niya sa intelligence unit ng nasabing police station,” Tuaño said.

The PNP dismissed earlier speculation that jealousy involving the woman who was killed triggered the violence.

According to Tuaño, the suspect had only been assigned to the station on December 8, while the woman had been working at the bar for roughly two months, weakening claims of any personal relationship.

Instead, investigators pointed to heavy drinking during a birthday celebration for the station’s chief of police.

“Tinanggal na nila ‘yung anggulong tungkol sa babae. Ito ay ina-attribute nila sa sobrang kalasingan dahil sa birthday celebration ng chief of police. Nagsimula pa ‘yung kanilang inuman sa police station at dinire-diretso nila sa nasabing restaurant,” Tuaño said.

Tuaño clarified that the three officers who were killed were already inside the bar when the shooting happened and were not responding to an incident.

He said the suspect had initially been disarmed but was not thoroughly searched or restrained.

“Nung mangyari ‘yung pamamaril, hinuli nila, dines-armahan ng caliber. 45. Ang pagkakamali lang dahil hindi kinapkapan, at hindi pinosasan, meron pa siyang issued [na baril],” he said.

Afterward, an argument inside a vehicle allegedly escalated into gunfire.

“Pagdating sa loob [ng sasakyan], sila ay nagtalo-talo at doon nagsimula ang pamamaril. At ‘yung dalawa na naiwang pulis na naka-motor, sila ‘yung tumawag sa medical personnel,” Tuaño added.

Following the incident, the provincial director of the Negros Oriental Police Provincial Office and the deputy chief of the Sibulan Police Station were relieved.

Acting PNP chief PLtGen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. later ordered strict supervision of personnel and the filing of criminal and administrative cases to ensure the suspect’s dismissal and imprisonment.

In a previous local report by KAMI, a family of three was mercilessly shot to death inside their own store in Barangay Mallorca, San Leonardo, Nueva Ecija. CCTV footage allegedly showed three men entering the shop, pulling down the roll-up door, and then opening fire on the victims until all three were killed. Before escaping, one of the suspects was seen taking a bag and a cellphone belonging to the family. According to TV5 Frontline Pilipinas correspondent Gary De Leon, the victims had reportedly been receiving threats after lending ₱1 million to a barangay resident who allegedly used the money to fund a business venture.

In another local incident that drew widespread attention, a 51-year-old public school teacher in Las Piñas City was stabbed multiple times by her husband. A report by EJ Gomez on Unang Balita said the 38-year-old suspect carried out the attack inside the school’s faculty room. Police noted that while a security guard was stationed on campus, the suspect was able to enter and leave easily because he was known to school personnel. Authorities said the suspect claimed he went to the school to speak with his wife and resolve their problems, but the conversation reportedly escalated into a heated argument that ended in violence.
