Off-duty policeman killed in riding-in-tandem attack in Zamboanga Sibugay

An off-duty police officer was killed after being ambushed by unidentified gunmen while on his way home in the municipality of Diplahan, Zamboanga Sibugay province late Wednesday night, December 31.

The Diplahan Municipal Police Station identified the victim as Police Staff Sergeant Juneray Estallo Gamones.
He was a resident of Malangas and was assigned to the Zamboanga del Sur Police Provincial Police Office based in Pagadian City.
According to initial findings, Gamones had just finished work in Pagadian City and was traveling alone on his motorcycle when the attack occurred.

As he passed through a stretch of road in Diplahan at around 11 p.m., suspects riding tandem on a motorcycle suddenly appeared and opened fire on him.
The gunmen immediately fled the area after the shooting, leaving Gamones fatally wounded.
He died on the spot due to multiple gunshot wounds, authorities said. Residents in the area reportedly heard several gunshots before discovering the victim lying on the roadside.
Responding police officers secured the crime scene and conducted an initial investigation.
Four spent shell casings believed to have come from a 5.56mm firearm were recovered in the area, indicating that a high-powered weapon was used in the attack.
Investigators also noted that Gamones’ service firearm was missing, raising the possibility that it may have been taken by the assailants after the shooting. Police have not yet determined the motive behind the killing or the identities of the suspects.
Authorities have launched follow-up investigations and pursuit operations to track down those responsible. Police are also looking into possible angles, including whether the incident was connected to Gamones’ line of duty.
The Philippine National Police vowed to exhaust all efforts to bring the perpetrators to justice and urged anyone with information about the incident to coordinate with the nearest police station.

At the same time, seasoned broadcaster Korina Sanchez-Roxas drew attention on social media after posting a photo from her recent visit to Disneyland. The image showed her posing in front of a palace-themed attraction, which quickly sparked online discussion. Her caption, which began with the words “My P10 Million Palace,” generated mixed reactions from netizens, with some viewing it as a playful reference to earlier allegations raised by Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto.
