A police officer died after he was shot multiple times while attending a wake in Barangay Tipanoy, Iligan City, early Sunday morning.

According to a report aired by GMA Regional TV on Monday, the victim was identified as a member of the Iligan City Mobile Force Company, based on information released by the Iligan City Police Office (ICPO).

The officer was reportedly at the wake when the suspect suddenly approached him.

Initial investigation showed that the assailant drew close to the victim and fired several shots without warning.

The officer sustained fatal gunshot wounds and was later declared dead.

After the shooting, the suspect immediately fled the area. Authorities launched a manhunt operation and are continuing efforts to identify and locate the person responsible for the killing.

Police checkpoints and follow-up operations have also been intensified in nearby areas.

Investigators are still working to determine the motive behind the attack.

Police are looking into possible personal and work-related angles, as well as reviewing witness statements and other evidence gathered from the scene.

ICPO Director Police Colonel Jerry Tambis expressed sympathy for the bereaved family and appealed to the public for cooperation.

“We extend our deepest sympathies to the family of our fallen personnel. We urge the public to remain calm and to cooperate with authorities as we continue to ensure peace and order in the city.”
"Further updates will be released as the investigation progresses,” says Tambis.

The incident has raised concerns among residents, as the shooting occurred in a place meant for mourning and remembrance.

Local authorities assured the public that they are taking all necessary steps to bring the suspect to justice and to maintain safety and order in Iligan City as the investigation continues.
