Man kills nephew, sets house ablaze, and sets himself on fire thereafter

A shocking and tragic incident unfolded in Barangay 2, San Carlos City, Negros Occidental on Sunday, December 14, after a 34-year-old man killed his teenage nephew before taking his own life by setting their house on fire.

According to Police Lt. Col. Nazer Canja, the chief of the San Carlos police, the 14-year-old victim had been resting in bed after complying with his uncle’s request to obtain gasoline.

Without warning, the suspect allegedly attacked the boy using a kitchen knife. The victim suffered three stab wounds and was later found lying on the pavement outside the house.

After the stabbing, authorities said the suspect went upstairs to the second floor of his parents’ home.

Shortly afterward, a fire broke out in the residence. Responding firefighters from the Bureau of Fire Protection in San Carlos managed to contain and extinguish the flames.

During a post-fire inspection, responders discovered the body of the suspect lying face down.

An electrical wire was found around his neck, further pointing to s&icide.

Police believe the suspect used the gasoline he had earlier asked his nephew to get in order to set both himself and the house on fire.

The suspect’s wife later shared information that may shed light on his state of mind prior to the incident.

She said the family noticed changes in his behavior after he returned home from Cebu province, where he had been working as a solar panel installer since March.

According to her, he became increasingly depressed after learning that a woman he was allegedly involved with in Cebu had become pregnant. The woman’s family had reportedly issued threats against him.

Police also revealed that the suspect had a known history of violent behavior, with previous incidents requiring police intervention.

Authorities continue to look into the circumstances surrounding the case as the community mourns the loss of a young life and grapples with the devastating events that followed.

In separate developments, Valenzuela City authorities have formed a special task group to conduct a full investigation into the serious injury of a pet dog that was found bleeding, with its tongue severely damaged. Investigators are reviewing CCTV footage that reportedly recorded the animal’s cries in the early hours of Tuesday morning. A witness has suggested that the injury may have resulted from a fight or encounter with another dog. Police stressed that all evidence, including video recordings and witness accounts, is still being carefully examined and verified before any determination is made.

Meanwhile, a devastating incident in the south claimed the lives of eight members of one family after a multicab crashed in the town of Ayungon, Negros Oriental. Police said the vehicle reportedly lost its brakes while traveling down a steep road, leading to the fatal accident. The victims were on their way to a cemetery to visit a deceased relative and were also planning to hold a Christmas gathering. Five other family members, including the driver, survived the crash and are currently confined in a hospital receiving treatment for their injuries.
