Eight family members killed in multicab crash in Negros Oriental

A tragic road accident claimed the lives of eight members of a single family after a multicab overturned in Sitio Tumampon, Barangay Tiguib, Ayungon, Negros Oriental on Tuesday morning at around 9:30 a.m.

According to Ayungon Municipal Police Station chief investigator Police Master Sergeant Jhunren Gargoles, a total of 13 family members were riding the multicab and were headed to a cemetery when the crash happened.

Some of the passengers had traveled from Dumaguete City and Manila to return to the province for a death anniversary and the Christmas season.

Initial police investigation revealed that the multicab lost its brakes while traversing a downhill road.

The vehicle reportedly overturned before crashing into a rocky area, resulting in severe injuries to the passengers.

Declared dead at the scene were Edwin Deguit Sr., Zenaida Sabanal, Libby De Jesus, 71, Ernesta Villasco, Anabelle Devero, and Elphy Deguit, 46, who worked as a Barangay Health Worker.

Authorities said the impact of the crash caused fatal injuries to the victims.

Two more passengers later succumbed to their injuries in the afternoon. These were Chinly Magalso, 42, and a 13-year-old girl, both of whom were initially listed in critical condition following the accident.

Meanwhile, five other family members survived the crash and are currently receiving medical treatment. A

mong them is the driver, Juan Maratas, 56, a resident of Barangay Bagacay in Dumaguete City. Police said the injured remain under close observation as doctors continue to monitor their condition.

Local authorities are continuing their investigation to determine whether mechanical failure was the sole cause of the accident. The incident has left the community in mourning, as relatives and neighbors grieve the sudden loss of multiple family members just days before Christmas.

In a previous report by KAMI, a shocking incident in Barangay Mallorca, San Leonardo, Nueva Ecija claimed the lives of an entire family after they were brutally gunned down inside their own store. CCTV footage showed three armed men entering the establishment, closing the roll-up door, and opening fire on the victims. One of the assailants was also seen taking a bag and a mobile phone from one of the family members before escaping. A report by TV5’s Frontline Pilipinas correspondent Gary De Leon revealed that the family had reportedly been receiving threats after lending ₱1 million to a barangay resident, who allegedly used the amount as capital for a business.

In a separate incident that also drew widespread attention, a 51-year-old public school teacher was fatally stabbed multiple times by her husband in Las Piñas City. According to Unang Balita reporter EJ Gomez, the attack occurred inside the school’s faculty room. Authorities said the campus had a security guard on duty, but the suspect was able to enter and leave without difficulty because he was familiar to people in the area. Police added that the husband claimed he went to the school to speak with his wife and settle a disagreement, but the discussion reportedly turned violent.
