In an Instagram Story posted recently, Ogie reminded the public — especially voters — to demand transparency and direct engagement from their preferred candidates, particularly when it comes to participating in presidential debates.

In his post, Ogie urged the voters not to tolerate candidates who refuse to appear in debates, stressing that such platforms are essential for assessing a contender’s readiness to lead. He emphasized that voters must insist on hearing candidates speak, explain, and defend their positions, noting that silence or avoidance should not be acceptable traits for someone seeking the highest office in the country.

“Para sa taumbayan, lalo na sa mga botante… Wag na wag kayong papayag na hindi lalahok sa Presidential Debate ang paborito n’yong kandidato. Catcang ia-alibi ay ‘ayokong sumali sa sarswela’ o kaya ay ‘bababa na lang ako diretsa sa mga tao kesa makipag-away on national tv.’ Charoterang palaka pag ganon.”

He continued by urging voters to respond with firmness:

“Kapag tumanggi, tanggihan nyo rin ng boto. Kung trip nyong magkaroon ng Presidenteng takot magsalita at marinig, kayo rin ang mahihirapan,” he penned, expressing his view that electing a leader who avoids public scrutiny could lead to long-term consequences for the country, especially if the president is reluctant to communicate openly.

Ogie then pointed out an analogy to emphasize the importance of communication:

“Di ba siya nahihiya sa mga deaf? Buti pa ang mga ito, ipinapaintindi nila ang gusto nilang sabihin at mensahe. Gumagawa sila ng paraan para makipag-communicate, tapos, yung Presidenteng gusto nyo, ayaw magsalita?”

In this comparison, Ogie underscored that even individuals who face communication challenges strive to express their messages clearly — something he believes should be expected even more from someone aspiring to be president.

Ogie’s message stressed that communication is a fundamental expectation from anyone aspiring to become president. He pointed out that debates give the public an unfiltered view of a candidate’s leadership style, depth of knowledge, and ability to respond under pressure. For Ogie, declining such opportunities keeps voters in the dark and weakens democratic engagement.

The post carries added weight given that Ogie shared it years before the next presidential election, which will take place in 2028. By voicing these concerns long before the official campaign season even begins, he underscored the importance of setting expectations early and refusing to normalize candidates’ avoidance of public scrutiny.
