The horrific accident occurred Wednesday morning in Camalig when a speeding truck, which reportedly suffered from brake failure, slammed into a southbound UV Express passenger van.
The tragedy took place around 9:00 a.m. along the bypass road in Barangay Libod, Camalig. The UV Express, which plied the Nabua–Legazpi route, was carrying a total of 13 passengers when it was violently struck by the heavy truck.
The force of the collision was so immense that both vehicles plunged into a nearby creek, severely trapping the occupants inside the mangled wreckage.
Local officials described the scene as catastrophic. Camalig Mayor Caloy Baldo confirmed the grim statistics in a social media post, noting the heavy death toll.
“Sa 13 sakay ng UV Express Van (Nabua–Legazpi route), dalawa lamang ang nakaligtas,” the mayor stated, emphasizing the sheer scope of the disaster.
The complexity of the wreckage, with both large vehicles submerged in the creek, necessitated a grueling eight-hour rescue and retrieval operation.
Emergency personnel, including police, fire, and disaster response teams, worked relentlessly to extricate the victims from the crushed vehicles.
The painstaking effort underscores the violent nature of the crash and the challenges faced by first responders in remote locations.
Initial police investigations strongly indicate that mechanical failure was the primary cause of the collision.
Reports suggest that the truck, which was traveling along the bypass road, lost its brakes, rendering the driver helpless to prevent the crash.
The uncontrolled truck then slammed into the UV Express before both vehicles careened off the road and into the water below.
The truck driver and his helper were among the very few survivors and were immediately taken to a hospital for medical treatment.
Their testimony will be crucial in verifying the sequence of events and the claims of mechanical failure.
Mayor Baldo extended his deepest condolences to the families of the deceased, acknowledging the profound and sudden loss that has struck multiple communities served by the busy transport route.
This mass casualty incident serves as a painful reminder of the critical need for rigorous safety and maintenance checks on all vehicles, particularly commercial trucks and public utility vehicles that traverse major provincial roads, where high speeds and varying terrain amplify the danger of mechanical failure.
The local government and the Land Transportation Office (LTO) are expected to face mounting calls for immediate action to prevent similar tragedies.
