Teacher fatally shot during drinking session in Nueva Ecija; suspect allegedly likes wife of victim

A tragic shooting in Talavera, Nueva Ecija claimed the life of a schoolteacher who was attacked while sharing drinks with a neighbor over the weekend.

According to a report by CJ Torida of GMA Regional TV One North Central Luzon, the incident occurred Saturday night in Barangay Población Sur, leaving 39-year-old Reynan Tiangco dead.

Police investigators said Tiangco was in the middle of a casual drinking session when an unidentified assailant suddenly appeared and opened fire.

The gunman and his companions immediately fled on a motorcycle, leaving the victim critically wounded.

Tiangco was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

By Sunday, a former barangay kagawad surrendered to authorities after being identified by a witness as one of the suspects and reportedly seen near the crime scene.

Investigators revealed that the man was allegedly interested in the victim’s wife, a motive they are considering in the case.

However, the suspect strongly denied the accusations, saying he turned himself in to clear his name.

“Kaibigan ko pong tunay, kuya ang tawag sa akin at wala po kaming pag-aaway, pag-aalit. Nagtataka nga po ako sa nangyari,” he said.

Records show he had previously been involved in a frustrated h&micide case.

The family of the victim said they were unaware of any disputes involving Tiangco and are now appealing for justice.

Meanwhile, authorities continue to pursue the unidentified gunman believed to have carried out the attack.

Police Lt. Col. Rogelio Pacificar, chief of the Talavera Police Station, stated that they will be filing a murder complaint against the suspect as the investigation progresses.

Police are currently investigating all possible angles to determine the motive and identity of the perpetrator.

Still in other news, a 49-year-old backhoe operator drowned after the heavy equipment he was driving capsized in a reclamation area in Hinigaran, Negros Occidental. Initial police findings suggest the machine overturned due to the soft and unstable soil in the coastal area. The operator was trapped inside the cockpit and pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital after an hour-long rescue effort. The local government is expected to review safety protocols for operating heavy machinery in high-risk zones.
