Authorities in Negros are digging deeper into the death of a 42-year-old single mother after a police staff sergeant claimed he mistakenly shot her.

Officials from the Police Regional Office-Negros Island Region (PRO-NIR) confirmed they are studying the officer’s account regarding the death of Kristine Joy Dignadice, whose remains were found in a sugarcane field in Barangay Don Jorge Araneta, Bago City on November 1.

Police Lt. Col. Joem Malong, PRO-NIR spokesperson, declined to elaborate on the circumstances leading to Dignadice’s death, saying investigators have yet to obtain and review the suspect’s signed affidavit.

The officer’s service firearm has been surrendered for ballistics testing, while an autopsy is ongoing to determine the exact cause of death.

The case drew attention earlier when Dignadice’s vehicle was discovered abandoned in another sugarcane field in Barangay Gargato, Hinigaran on October 29, bearing visible bloodstains.

Three days later, the 43-year-old policeman surrendered, which led authorities to the victim’s body.

Police leadership in Bacolod and PRO-NIR strongly denounced the incident, promising a thorough and transparent investigation.

Officials also noted that key questions remain, including how the vehicle and body ended up in separate areas.

National Police Commission Commissioner Rafael Vicente Calinisan ordered an independent motu proprio investigation, citing the involvement of an active police officer.

“The Napolcom will ensure that due process is observed and that the erring police officer will be held fully accountable. The administrative case will proceed separately from any criminal proceedings filed before the court,” Calinisan stated, adding that the agency remains committed to enforcing discipline within police ranks.
