The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has acknowledged the passing of a Filipino seafarer who was assigned to the cruise vessel MV Arvia, operated by P&O Cruises.

The agency announced the news on Thursday and noted that an investigation is underway to determine the circumstances behind the death.

In an official statement, the DMW explained that the manning company that deployed the seafarer has begun coordinating with the cruise ship’s operator to establish a clear and accurate account of what happened.

“The licensed manning agency that deployed the seafarer reported that the circumstances surrounding the crew member’s death are still under investigation and that they are in ongoing coordination with the vessel owner to ensure a thorough and transparent process,” the agency said.

Authorities assured the public that the bereaved family is not facing the ordeal alone.

According to the DMW, communication lines remain open to the relatives, who are being given updates regarding developments in the case.

“The DMW, along with the licensed manning agency, has already notified the family and continues to offer assistance and regular updates on every development of the case,” it added.

Extending its sympathies, the DMW described the loss as a painful moment for the maritime sector.

The agency underscored the dedication of Filipino seafarers working across the globe, saying, “Our seafarers serve with dedication and bravery in international waters, and we honor their service, professionalism, and sacrifice.”

The department reaffirmed its pledge to uphold the welfare and dignity of overseas Filipino workers, particularly in times of tragedy and hardship.

In other news, a 23-year-old lady rider, identified as Jessica, died after her motorcycle crashed into an oncoming van in Cauayan City, Isabela. Police investigation suggests the rider lost control of her motorcycle while driving at speed on an uphill road section. The victim sustained severe injuries and was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital. The driver of the van is in police custody and faces charges of Reckless Imprudence Resulting in Hom1cide and Damage to Property.
