OFW survives brutal screwdriver attack in Rizal; suspect arrested

A 39-year-old Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) was seriously wounded after being stabbed with a screwdriver by a man in Barangay San Jose, Rodriguez, Rizal, on Monday afternoon, October 27.

Based on a report from the Rodriguez Municipal Police Station (MPS), the victim, identified as “Aira,” was walking to a nearby store along B4, Phase 1, Kasiglahan Village at around 4:45 p.m. when the suspect, identified as “Patrick,” 24, suddenly attacked her from behind.
Authorities said the suspect repeatedly stabbed the victim with a pointed screwdriver without any apparent provocation.
A witness who saw the violent assault immediately intervened and managed to seize the weapon from the suspect.

Other bystanders quickly notified nearby police officers, who responded right away and arrested the assailant.
Law enforcers also recovered the approximately 8-inch screwdriver used in the attack.
The victim was rushed to the hospital and is currently confined at the East Avenue Medical Center, where she continues to receive medical treatment for her injuries.
Police said the motive behind the attack remains unclear as of this writing. The suspect is now in police custody and will be facing charges of frustrated murder.
Authorities commended the quick actions of the witnesses and residents, emphasizing that their cooperation played a vital role in the swift arrest of the suspect and the recovery of the weapon used in the crime.

Still in other news, the Ombudsman directed the NBI and BFP to investigate the DPWH building fire in Quezon City. DPWH confirmed that no documents related to flood control anomaly investigations were affected. The fire reportedly started from a computer explosion inside the Bureau of Research and Standards. No employees were injured, and officials are assessing the extent of the damage.
