Authorities have confirmed the untimely demise of three individuals, while a desperate search operation is underway for two others who remain unaccounted for.

The accident, which has sent a pall of grief across the community, is currently under intense investigation by local authorities.

Initial reports indicate that the truck, before its deadly drop, collided with at least two parked vehicles on the mountain road.

It then plummeted an estimated 150 to 170 meters (roughly 500 to 560 feet) into the gorge, landing with devastating force in the deep currents of the river.

The five individuals aboard the Elf truck were all construction workers, reportedly en route to a project site located in Kuro-Kuro, Sadanga.

Their journey, meant to be a day of honest labor, ended in heartbreak along the river that carves its way through the Cordillera mountains.

It was revealed that four of the five victims were reportedly from Pangasinan, highlighting the sacrifices made by workers who travel far from home to find livelihood.

Emergency teams, including the Bontoc Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) and local police, immediately launched extensive search, rescue, and retrieval operations.

The efforts are particularly challenging due to the height of the fall and the swift, unforgiving flow of the Chico River, which complicates the search for the two missing passengers.

Coordination is often required with downriver communities, sometimes even extending to nearby provinces like Kalinga, in case the victims' bodies were swept further downstream.

As of the latest reports, the bodies of the three deceased victims have been recovered from the river, but the operation continues with undiminished resolve to locate their two missing companions.

The local police have yet to release an official statement regarding the precise cause of the accident, though their investigation is actively working to piece together the sequence of events that led to the fatal collision and plunge.

This incident serves as a grim reminder of the inherent dangers of traveling the steep, winding, and often unforgiving roads of the Cordillera region, particularly for those whose livelihoods depend on traversing them daily.

The community mourns the loss of the three workers and holds onto hope for the safe recovery of the two men still lost to the river.
