The incident occurred at the BU sports complex during the much-anticipated BU Hataw 2025 event.
According to "The Bicol Universitarian," the colored smoke, which was meant to enhance the finale of the performance, filled the venue prematurely after some participants ignited the smoke bombs ahead of schedule.
The thick smoke reportedly caused cases of hyperventilation, suffocation, and panic among the crowd.

Students struggling to breathe were immediately brought outside the sports complex, where rescuers provided medical attention.
Some were later transferred to nearby hospitals for further treatment.
In response, the Office of the University President promptly suspended classes and postponed all activities related to the intramurals, citing the “emotional and physical toll” the event had on the campus community.
The administration assured that the University Health Service (UHS) would continue monitoring both hospitalized and outpatient students, advising anyone showing symptoms to seek medical evaluation.
“This is to ensure the well-being of everyone affected by the incident,” the statement read.
A similar incident was previously recorded in 2023 at Bacolod City College, where at least 22 students and staff fell ill after exposure to colored smoke during a class presentation, highlighting the potential health risks associated with such visual effects.
