Radio broadcaster, wounded after shooting incident in Albay

Radio broadcaster Noel Bellen Samar was shot and injured along Maharlika Highway in Guinobatan, Albay, on Monday morning.

The 54-year-old reporter from Kadunong iTV and DWIZ was rushed to a hospital in Legazpi City after the attack around 9:05 a.m. in Barangay Morera.

The suspect managed to escape after the shooting.

Police Regional Office 5 spokesperson Police Lieutenant Colonel Malu Calubaquib confirmed Samar’s identity.

A Special Investigation Task Group called “Samar” was formed to look into the motive and identify the gunman.

Police Regional Office 5 Director PBGen Nestor Babagay Jr. strongly condemned the attack and ordered his team to solve the case immediately.

He said that investigators have been instructed to move quickly and leave no stone unturned until the suspect is caught and brought to justice.

Babagay added that such violence against media workers is unacceptable, as they play an important role in truth and public awareness.

The Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFOMS) also denounced the shooting.

Executive Director Undersecretary Jose Torres Jr. said Samar sustained gunshot wounds to the chest and stomach and is now receiving critical medical treatment.

Torres said a PTFOMS team has been deployed to help ensure a full and fair investigation.

He emphasized that aside from catching the gunman, finding out the motive and those behind the attack is equally important to deliver justice.

Police authorities said the school has a security guard, but, being a familiar face in the school, the suspect managed to easily get in and out of the school. The suspect said he was there to talk to his wife and settle their misunderstanding, but unfortunately, it led to a big arguement.
