The fatal incident occurred at Sitio Marabahay in Barangay Rio Tuba, Bataraza, which is situated in the southern part of Palawan, a province known as one of the Philippines' last frontiers for its rich biodiversity—and its population of native crocodiles.

According to reports from Super Radyo Palawan, the young man, a resident of Taytay town who was identified in other reports as Leonard Casio, was on a solo fishing venture.

He had reportedly anchored his small boat and decided to take a rest. It was during this vulnerable moment, while he was asleep, that a crocodile is believed to have launched its attack, silently and swiftly pulling him from the safety of his watercraft.

The predator then dragged the helpless victim into a dense, nearby mangrove swamp. The alarm was immediately raised by a companion of the victim, leading to a large-scale, urgent search and rescue operation.

Personnel from the Coast Guard Station Southern Palawan, the Philippine National Police Maritime Group, and local barangay officials immediately mobilized to scour the murky waters and thick vegetation.

The search efforts were temporarily hampered by the challenging conditions—high tide, poor visibility, and the very real and present danger of the large crocodile still lurking in the vicinity.

The body was brought to the nearest barangay center, where family members were able to positively identify him.

His remains were later transported to a funeral home in Brooke’s Point for final arrangements.

As investigations continue, the local government and environmental agencies are expected to renew warnings and possibly reinforce measures to manage and mitigate such tragic encounters in the future.
