Seven people have been confirmed dead after two strong earthquakes shook Davao Oriental and nearby areas, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported on Saturday morning, October 11.

In its 6 a.m. situational report, the NDRRMC said three of the victims were from Mati City, another three from Pantukan, and one from Davao City.

In Mati City, a 54-year-old woman was killed after a wall collapsed on her, while two others died of heart attacks during the quake.

Three residents in Barangay Kingking, Pantukan, Davao de Oro, were buried alive at a mining site.

The victim in Davao City was an 80-year-old man crushed by a concrete wall.

Authorities said about 3,519 families, or 8,436 individuals, were affected across the Davao and Caraga regions.

Of this number, 2,468 families or 7,915 people have been relocated to seven evacuation centers.

Reports also showed that 28 houses were damaged, with five completely destroyed.

In addition, five roads and one bridge in Davao, Soccsksargen, and Caraga were closed to the public due to damage.

The first quake, a magnitude 7.4, struck Davao Oriental on the morning of Friday, October 10, followed by a magnitude 6.8 tremor that night.

These two quakes were described by experts as a “doublet” or twin earthquakes, which occur when two strong tremors happen closely in time and location.

The suspect said he was there to talk to his wife and settle their misunderstanding, but unfortunately, it led to a big arguement.
