Injured seafarer from the Gulf of Aden attack passes away

The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) confirmed on Wednesday, October 8, that a Filipino seafarer who was severely injured during the Houthi rebel attack on a cargo ship in the Gulf of Aden has died.

The assault took place on September 29 while the vessel MV Minervagracht was sailing about 120 nautical miles from the port city of Aden.

DMW Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac expressed deep sympathy to the victim’s family through his official X (formerly Twitter) account.

He assured them that the government would provide full assistance as directed by President Marcos.

Cacdac also said he was traveling to Djibouti to help arrange the repatriation of the seafarer’s remains and personally check on another injured Filipino still recovering in the hospital.

He was accompanied by DMW Assistant Secretary Jerome Pampolina, along with the seafarer’s wife and sister.

Reports said the cargo ship caught fire after being hit by an unidentified projectile launched by the rebels.

Rescuers were able to save 19 crew members on board, including Filipinos, Russians, Ukrainians, and Sri Lankans.

Among the 12 Filipino crew members, one sustained minor injuries while another was in critical condition and later died.

The remaining 10 Filipino seafarers safely returned to the Philippines on October 5.

The DMW vowed continued support to the victims’ families and reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety and welfare of overseas Filipino workers.
