A tragic accident took place in Gutalac, Zamboanga del Norte, when a truck loaded with coffee and milk products fell into a ravine about 20 feet deep.

The incident happened on Monday in Barangay Mamawan, according to a report on GMA Regional TV One Mindanao.

Police Regional Office-9 said the truck was moving downhill when the driver noticed the brakes were no longer working.

He tried to control the vehicle, but it went straight off the side of the highway.

Police Major Shellamie Chang explained that the driver said the brakes became stiff and failed to respond, causing the truck to plunge into the ravine.

One of the helpers got pinned down and was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

The driver and another helper survived the accident but sustained injuries. Both were given medical treatment after the incident.

Authorities also confirmed that the company owning the truck has already coordinated with the victims to provide support and assistance.

Police continue to remind drivers to carefully check their vehicles before travel, especially when carrying heavy loads and passing through downhill roads to avoid similar accidents.

The incident left residents alarmed, as accidents involving cargo trucks have been recorded in the area before.

Safety checks and proper maintenance are strongly advised to prevent such tragedies from happening again.
