The victim, identified as Atty. Joshua Lavega Abrina, a former legal officer for the Department of Education (DepEd) in Palawan and an employee of the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA), was gunned down late on Wednesday, September 17.
According to initial reports from the Puerto Princesa City Police, Abrina had just returned from a prayer meeting with his family and was in the process of unloading their belongings when the assailant approached him and opened fire.
The lawyer was rushed to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. The police have since formed a Special Investigation Task Group (SITG) to focus on the case and bring the perpetrator to justice. Authorities are currently looking into all possible angles and motives for the killing.
The senseless act of violence immediately drew the ire of the legal profession. The Supreme Court, through Senior Associate Justice Marvic Leonen, condemned the killing, calling it a "grave matter that strikes at the very core of justice and the rule of law."
Leonen extended his condolences to the victim's family and colleagues and directed the Chief Marshal and Deputy Marshal for Luzon to communicate with investigative agencies to obtain updates on the case.
The Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) also released a scathing statement, emphasizing that the killing of Atty. Abrina is not an isolated incident but a reflection of a "growing culture of impunity and lawlessness."
The IBP noted that lawyers across the country have been harassed, attacked, and killed simply for performing their professional duties.
The IBP Palawan Chapter has vowed to work with authorities to ensure a thorough investigation is conducted, while the national office has also promised to "exhaust all means" to bring justice for the victim.
Atty. Abrina's death marks the eighth killing of a legal professional under the current administration, according to data from the National Union of Peoples’ Lawyers.
The high number of such incidents highlights the persistent threats faced by lawyers in the country and has led to a call for more decisive action from leaders and institutions to protect the members of the legal profession.
