The accident, which occurred on Tuesday, has left the community shaken and serves as a grim reminder of the dangers of overtaking on provincial roads.

According to a report by GMA Regional TV One North Central Luzon, the incident happened in Barangay Salaan.

CCTV footage captured the sequence of events leading up to the fatal crash. The video shows the businessman's pickup truck overtaking a pedicab just before a small bridge.

As the pickup attempted to return to its lane, its wheel struck the low concrete barrier of the bridge, causing the vehicle to tip over and fall into the river below.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Perlito Tuayon, the chief of the Mangaldan Police Station, confirmed the details of the accident.

"Siya po ang nag-overtake sa isang pedicab at ito po accidentally nabangga ’yung isang edge ng tulay," Tuayon stated.

He noted that the bridge was particularly small, measuring only about five meters in width, leaving little room for error.

"Ang nasabing tulay ay maliit lamang. Ang width niya nasa five meters lamang po," Tuayon added.

Rescuers, including local residents and police, immediately rushed to the scene to pull the victim out of the submerged vehicle.

However, by the time he was extricated, he had already passed away. Authorities believe the victim's head struck a hard surface during the fall, rendering him unconscious and unable to escape.

"Possibly tumama ’yung ulo niya. Unconscious agad siya at hindi na ito gumagalaw ayon sa mga taong na-interview namin," Tuayon explained.

The victim was a prominent businessman in the area, and his untimely death has left his family and colleagues in shock. The family has declined to issue a statement to the media as they grieve the sudden loss.

This tragic accident underscores the critical need for caution on narrow roads and bridges, particularly in rural areas.

Local authorities are urging drivers to be more vigilant and to avoid overtaking in dangerous situations, as a simple error in judgment can have fatal consequences.

The police have launched a full investigation to determine if there were other contributing factors to the crash.
