Police Major Joann Navarro, spokesperson for the Police Regional Office-Northern Mindanao (PRO-10), stated that the police officer was a passenger in the van, seated next to the driver.

He was supposed to get off in the municipality of Balingoan but reportedly fell asleep during the journey.

Upon waking up, the officer realized the van had already passed his intended stop and was nearing Talisayan.

An argument allegedly erupted between the suspect and the van driver, with the policeman demanding that the vehicle turn back to Balingoan.

The verbal confrontation escalated, leading the officer to open fire on the driver. In the ensuing chaos, a male passenger attempting to get out of the van was also shot and killed, while a female passenger sustained injuries but managed to survive.

Authorities were able to quickly identify the suspect through witness testimonies, forensic evidence, and CCTV footage gathered from the area.

Police confirmed that the officer's firearm will undergo a ballistic examination to match it with the spent shells recovered from the crime scene. The suspect has since been placed under restrictive custody.
