A tragic incident unfolded at a community checkpoint in Brgy. Gaddangao, Rizal, Cagayan on Saturday night, September 13, after a policeman opened fire on his colleagues, killing one and wounding another.

The suspect, a Senior Master Sergeant and resident of Tuao, Cagayan, was identified as being assigned to the Rizal Municipal Police Station along with the victims.

The slain officer was Police Executive Master Sergeant (PEMS) Danilo Binondo, a resident of Piat, Cagayan, while the injured officer was PEMS Manuel Deodato, a resident of Rizal, Cagayan.

According to the Cagayan Police Provincial Office, the suspect initially approached and pointed his firearm at another policeman.

When Binondo and Deodato tried to intervene, the suspect unexpectedly fired at them using his issued long firearm.

The victims were rushed to the hospital, but Binondo was declared dead on arrival. Deodato is currently recovering from his injuries.

Authorities said the suspect attempted to flee after the shooting but later surrendered to his station chief.

The motive for the attack remains under investigation.

Police Regional Office 2 Director PBGen. Roy Parena personally visited the victims to extend assistance and assure their families of continued support.

The incident has shocked the local police community, raising concerns over the safety of officers even within their own ranks.

Investigators are now looking into the background and circumstances that may have led to the shooting.
