Authorities have placed the driver and his companion under custody. Both of them vowed to shoulder the burial expenses of the victim.
Police continue to investigate the case while the victim’s relatives have not yet given any public statement.
The tragic accident has drawn attention to road safety in the area, with residents expressing worry about reckless driving on the highway.
If a tricycle driver hits and kills a man walking on the side of the road, the driver may face criminal charges such as reckless imprudence resulting in homicide under Philippine law.
He will be placed under police custody while an investigation is conducted to determine if negligence, overspeeding, or other violations caused the accident.
The driver may also face civil liability, which means he and possibly the tricycle owner must provide financial compensation to the victim’s family, including funeral and burial expenses, loss of income, and damages for the emotional suffering caused.
If proven guilty in court, the driver may serve a jail sentence, pay fines, or both.
However, penalties can vary depending on the circumstances, such as whether the driver stayed and helped the victim, or if he fled the scene, which would result in heavier consequences.
