Witnesses were first alarmed when they saw the man, carrying a bag and a mobile phone, perched precariously on the rooftop of a structure situated at the water’s edge.
The man’s strange behavior and unknown intentions immediately drew a crowd, prompting concerned citizens to call the authorities.
Responding police officers arrived on the scene and began a difficult negotiation to persuade him to come down.
During the tense exchange, police learned a cryptic detail: the man, who was a resident of Mangatarem, expressed a desire for his mother to come and pick him up.
He appeared to be holding his phone as if trying to contact her, though his exact words and intentions remained unclear.
Shortly after, a woman arrived claiming to be his sister-in-law and also pleaded with him to descend, but her efforts were likewise unsuccessful.
As the situation reached a critical point, a police officer courageously climbed onto the roof to directly appeal to the man.
However, instead of complying, the man moved to the edge of the roof, positioning himself to jump. On the ground, a rescue team was already in place.
A small boat with a police officer and a boatman was positioned in the river, ready to act in case the man made the plunge.
The onlookers gasped as the man suddenly jumped. In a surprising and fortunate turn of events, he did not fall into a deep section of the river.
Instead, he landed safely in an unusually shallow part, where the water was only knee-high. The waiting police team was able to quickly assist him, pulling him to safety from the water.
He was then escorted to the police station for questioning.
As of now, the man's identity has not been publicly released, and his motives for the strange act remain a mystery.
Authorities are continuing their investigation, hoping to shed light on what drove the man to such a desperate and public display.
The incident has left many in the community bewildered, with the fortunate outcome being the only silver lining to an otherwise alarming event.
