The son of a barangay captain in Cebu City was taken into custody during a recent anti-drug operation that yielded an estimated P1.7 million worth of illegal drug5.

The suspect, a man known by the alias "Jun," was arrested by agents from the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) in Central Visayas, along with members of the Philippine National Police Regional Intelligence Unit.

The operation, which took place on Benedicto Street in Barangay Tejero, was the culmination of a month-long surveillance and case buildup.

According to authorities, the suspect was a high-value individual and a "regional target-listed drug personality."

Seized from him were five packs of suspected shabu (methamphetamine), with a total weight of approximately 250 grams.

PDEA-7 Information Officer Leia Alcantara confirmed that the suspect had been under close monitoring after investigators received intelligence reports about his alleged involvement in drug traffick1ng.

Reports indicated that the suspect was capable of distributing up to a kilogram of shabu per week to customers across various areas of Cebu City.

This is not the first time the suspect has been on law enforcement's radar.

Investigators revealed that the same individual was previously charged with violating the Comprehensive Dangerous Drug5 Act of 2002 in 2022 but managed to evade arrest during a police operation at the time.

In a statement, the suspect's father, the barangay captain of Barangay Carreta, voiced his disbelief.

He claims that his son is not involved in illegal drug activities and that the arrest was politically motivated.

The barangay official said he believes the arrest was a "setup" and pointed to the upcoming barangay elections as a possible motive.

He also noted that his son, who works as a garbage truck driver for the barangay, does not even smoke or drink.

The PDEA has defended the legitimacy of the operation, stating that the arrest was the result of a lawful and well-executed sting.

The seized evidence has been submitted to the PDEA-7 Regional Office Laboratory for chemical analysis.

The suspect is currently detained at the PDEA-7 detention facility and will face charges for violations of Republic Act 9165, also known as the Comprehensive Dangerous Drug5 Act of 2002.

The charges include selling and possessing dangerous drug5.
