The suspect was apprehended after a collaborative effort between the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) and the Animal Kingdom Foundation (AKF) revealed his involvement in the illicit business.
Acting on a tip from the Animal Kingdom Foundation, the CIDG conducted an operation in Barangay Caraitan. The intelligence suggested that a local resident was actively involved in the sale of dog meat, a practice that is illegal in the Philippines.
During the raid, authorities were able to rescue one living dog, which was immediately taken into the care of animal welfare officials. They also recovered more than two kilograms of what was confirmed to be dog meat, packaged and ready for sale.
The suspect, whose identity was not immediately released, reportedly confessed to the crime. He is now facing serious charges for violations of the Animal Welfare Act of 1998 and the Anti-Rabies Act of 2007.
These laws explicitly prohibit the sale and slaught3r of dogs for commercial purposes, with violators facing both fines and imprisonment.
The Animal Welfare Act, in particular, penalizes individuals who engage in the inhumane treatment of animals, while the Anti-Rabies Act seeks to protect public health by preventing the spread of rabies through the dog meat trade.
This latest arrest is part of a larger ongoing campaign by law enforcement and animal welfare groups to curb the illegal dog meat trade, which remains a persistent problem in some parts of the country.
The trade is not only considered cruel but also poses a significant public health risk due to the unsanitary conditions under which the animals are slaught3red and the potential for rabies transmission.
The Animal Kingdom Foundation, a key partner in the operation, has been vocal about the importance of sustained efforts to combat this trade.
They emphasize that while arrests are a crucial step, continuous public awareness and community vigilance are needed to fully eradicate the illegal practice.
The rescued dog is now receiving necessary veterinary care and will be processed for rehabilitation and adoption.
The suspect is currently in police custody and will undergo inquest proceedings. This incident serves as a strong warning to others involved in the illegal trade that law enforcement and animal welfare groups are actively working to hold them accountable.
