The heartbreaking incident, which was reportedly captured on a CCTV camera, occurred on the evening of Wednesday, August 27, 2025, during a period of intense rain.
According to a report by ABS-CBN News, the child was identified as an 8-year-old girl who was with her cousin near a canal on Pag-asa Street in Barangay San Juan when the incident occurred.
Her grandmother, Sonia San Jose, recounted that the girl had asked her father's permission to play outside in the rain.
At around 6:00 p.m., the canal swelled with water, and a slipper was swept away. The girl's cousin, also a 9-year-old female, initially fell into the canal while trying to retrieve the slipper but was rescued. However, the victim was swept away by the strong current.
The Taytay Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) was alerted at 6:58 p.m. and immediately launched a search and rescue operation.
Markjay Pulumbarit, the deputy head of the Taytay MDRRMO, stated that initial reports indicated two children had been swept away, but their teams quickly confirmed that one child had been rescued.
The search for the missing girl was extremely difficult and dangerous due to the rising water levels and strong currents.
Despite the persistent efforts of rescue teams, the search had to be suspended before midnight on Wednesday due to poor visibility and unsafe water conditions.
The search resumed the following morning, with the assistance of additional resources, including the Philippine Coast Guard.
On Friday morning, August 29, the search operation concluded when the child's body was discovered in a creek in Barangay Anak Pawis, Cainta, confirming the worst fears of her family and the authorities.
The family positively identified the body, which showed signs of the trauma suffered during the fall and the powerful torrents.
While the family has not yet released a public statement, local authorities have issued a stark warning to residents, particularly parents, about the dangers posed by floodwaters and canals during heavy downpours.
The incident serves as a tragic reminder for the community to avoid wading or playing in flooded areas, no matter how shallow they may seem, as hidden dangers like strong currents or open canals can lead to fatal accidents.
