While the bizarre sight immediately caught the attention of law enforcers, the driver was ultimately cited for more serious, but mundane, roadworthiness violations.

The incident unfolded on Thursday when members of the Special Action and Intelligence Committee for Transportation (SAICT) flagged down the jeepney.

The enforcers, visibly surprised by the bird perched on the vehicle's engine cover, asked the driver for an explanation.

The driver, whose name was not disclosed, reportedly explained that the chicken was a gift from his mother and served as a good luck charm for his daily commute.

Despite the driver's sentimental explanation, officials instructed him to immediately remove the animal from its unsafe position.

Although the live poultry was the initial reason for the apprehension, the driver was not ticketed for the animal itself.

Instead, the inspection revealed a number of critical safety issues. The jeepney's spare tire was found to be severely worn out and no longer fit for use, while its brake lights were completely non-functional—two violations that pose a significant risk to passengers and other motorists.

The SAICT operation on Thursday morning was part of a larger, more comprehensive crackdown on public utility vehicles (PUVs) with safety issues.

In addition to the jeepney with the chicken, at least five other drivers were ticketed for various infractions.

Among the most common violations was allowing passengers to hang on the outside of the vehicle, a dangerous practice known as "sabit" that has been a long-standing concern for transportation officials.

Despite the momentary delay, passengers aboard the apprehended vehicles generally expressed understanding for the operation.

They acknowledged that while the stops were inconvenient, they were necessary to ensure the safety of commuters.

Officials from the Land Transportation Office (LTO) and the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) have consistently emphasized that these roadworthiness checks are crucial for reducing road accidents and ensuring that PUVs are compliant with safety regulations.

The incident serves as a peculiar reminder of the daily challenges and unique situations that traffic enforcers face on the country's busy roads.
