Investigators recovered more than 100 bullet shells from different types of firearms at the scene.
Police said the victims were on their way to Pembalkan, Mamasapano, when they were attacked in Proper Linantangan, Shariff Saydona Mustapha.
Authorities are still determining whether the crime was related to a clan war or just a conflict between groups.
Maguindanao Police Provincial Office spokesperson Capt. Guiseppe Tamayo said they are still confirming if it was a rido or simply a dispute between factions.
The police will also send a written protest to the MILF leadership to address the incident.
Tamayo explained that the usual process is to submit a formal complaint to the peace-inclined group’s leaders so that sanctions can be imposed on their members involved in such acts.
