A staff member of Albuera, Leyte Mayor Kerwin Espinosa was found dead inside the mayor’s residence on Thursday, August 7, 2025, after allegedly taking his own life.

Reports said witnesses inside the house quickly alerted authorities when they heard the illegal discharge of a firearm.

Before the incident, the victim reportedly went on a rampage inside the home while Mayor Espinosa was at the Municipal Hall.

Sources said the man had been dealing with depression.

Moments later, he locked himself inside a room and refused to come out despite attempts from other staff to talk him down.

Mayor Espinosa decided to return home to speak with the victim directly.

The victim even requested the presence of media representatives as one of his conditions.

Negotiations between the mayor and the victim lasted for around 30 minutes.

Soon after, a gunshot echoed inside the house. Authorities, getting no response from the victim, forced their way into the locked room.

Inside, they found him lying on the bed with a gunshot wound to the head. A .45 caliber pistol was recovered from the scene, along with several ATM cards and cash amounting to ₱56,570.

The suspect said he was there to talk to his wife and settle their misunderstanding, but unfortunately, it led to a big arguement.
