The dispute centers on the project's alleged violation of local zoning laws and the lack of proper consultation with residents.
The initial report, based on a viral social media video, sparked a broader discussion about accountability and community rights.
During the meeting, Senator Tulfo, a resident of the area, questioned the legitimacy of the project, which is being developed by Shang Properties Inc.
He accused some local officials and the homeowners' association of granting a permit without consulting the community.
This led to a heated verbal exchange, during which Barangay Captain Margarita Climaco threatened to sue the senator for libel.
The captain asserted that no clearance had been given by the barangay for the construction.
In a recent development, the Mandaluyong City Council issued a formal certification stating that it has not approved or received any permit applications for the project.
This official document, signed by Vice Mayor Antonio DLS Suva Jr. and several councilors, contradicts the claims made by the developers and affirms the residents' stance.
The city council's clarification provides a significant boost to the residents' petition to block the development.
The proposed condominium project has been met with strong opposition from residents of Greenhills East Village.
They have launched a petition, citing the project's potential to threaten the peace and safety of the neighborhood, and highlighting that it violates the city's Comprehensive Land Use Plan and the Green Building Ordinance.
Opponents also expressed concern over the projected nine-year construction timeline, which they say would pose serious risks to the community, including students at the nearby La Salle Green Hills School and worshippers at Santuario De San Jose Church.
Senator Tulfo has called for a full review and cancellation of any permits, urging the city government to hold a transparent public hearing.
He emphasized that the issue is not just about a building but about protecting the community's character, safety, and the right of residents to be heard.
The incident underscores a growing problem of developers allegedly bypassing standard procedures and the need for greater vigilance from the public and local government units to ensure that urban development is both responsible and compliant with existing laws.
