Eight people, including a 14-year-old girl, were killed while 15 others sustained injuries after a mini dump truck plunged into a ravine in Barangay Christianuevo, Lebak town, Sultan Kudarat on Wednesday, August 6.

According to the police, the vehicle was carrying 22 individuals, including the driver, and was on its way to Cotabato City from Barangay Poloy-Poloy.

The tragedy occurred as the truck descended a steep and curved section of the road in Barangay Christianuevo.

Authorities reported that the truck's brakes failed, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle.

It then hit a pile of concrete debris from an ongoing road construction project before plunging into the ravine.

Emergency responders rushed to the scene and transported the injured to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Several of the victims sustained serious injuries and are currently under observation.

The local government and police are coordinating to assist the families of the deceased and the injured.

A full investigation is underway to determine if there were any lapses in vehicle maintenance or road safety measures in the area.

The incident has prompted calls from residents and officials for stricter enforcement of road safety regulations, especially on mountainous routes with active construction work.

Authorities have yet to release the names of the victims, pending notification of their families. The public is also urged to exercise caution when traveling through steep and hazardous roads.

The blast was caused by a dismantled air-conditioning compressor that was being scavenged. One of the victims sustained a severed hand and another suffered a jaw injury, while two others had minor injuries. The Manila Police District's Explosive Ordnance Division and Scene of the Crime Operatives are investigating the incident and have ruled out a bomb as the cause.
