A 20-year-old man from Malabon died from leptospirosis after spending several days in floodwaters searching for his missing father.
The family later discovered that the father had been arrested by police for alleged illegal gambling.
According to the victim’s mother, Jennelyn, her husband Jayson left home on July 22 to take another child to work but never returned.
Concerned, she and her son Dion began searching separately—Jennelyn in Malabon and Dion in Caloocan—wading through deep floodwaters caused by heavy rain.

On July 25, Dion found his father detained at a police substation. Police said Jayson had been caught playing the street game “kara y krus” and was facing illegal gambling charges.
Jennelyn claimed the police never informed the family of his arrest and accused them of “pangsakto,” or arresting people to meet a quota.
Police denied the allegation, insisting they had no quota and did not hide Jayson’s detention.
Two days after reuniting with his father, Dion developed a fever and body aches. He later died in his sleep.
Doctors determined the cause was cardiac arrest linked to leptospirosis, likely contracted from his prolonged exposure to floodwaters.
Jennelyn said her son had foot sores due to days of wading in the water.
Jayson was released from detention on August 2. The family is now focused on giving Dion a proper burial while questioning inconsistencies in police records about where Jayson was held and when he was detained.
Police maintain that Jayson was arrested early morning on July 25 and was kept at their headquarters, though Dion claimed he saw him in a substation later that same day.

In a report by Gary De Leon of TV 5's 'Frontline Pilipinas,' the family started getting threats after lending P1-M to one of the residents of their barangay; allegedly using the money for business.
In another viral local report, a 51-year-old public school teacher in Las Piñas City was stabbed multiple times by her own husband. According to the report of EJ Gomez in 'Unang Balita,' the 38-year-old suspect committed the crime inside the school's faculty room. Police authorities said the school has a security guard, but, being a familiar face in the school, the suspect managed to easily get in and out of the school. The suspect said he was there to talk to his wife and settle their misunderstanding, but unfortunately, it led to a big arguement.
