A police officer was arrested after he allegedly discharged his service firearm outside a vape shop in Caloocan City, an incident that was captured on video and quickly went viral online.

The National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) has condemned the officer's actions and vowed to hold him accountable.

The incident occurred late Thursday, July 31, in Barangay 33, Maypajo. According to reports, the policeman, who was in civilian clothes, was seen arguing with a group of people outside a vape shop.

A video clip of the incident shows the officer, identified as Patrolman Christian Paul C. Castillo of the Malabon City Police Station, firing a single shot into the air.

After the gunshot, Castillo can be heard saying "sorry" to the stunned onlookers as he gets on his motorcycle and drives away. No one was reported injured during the incident.

The video sparked widespread outrage on social media, with many users questioning the officer's behavior and sense of responsibility.

In response, NCRPO Chief Police Major General Anthony Aberin swiftly ordered an investigation and the immediate arrest of the officer involved.

According to a statement, Aberin said, "When there's an abuse of power by our police, we won't hesitate to take action. If an administrative investigation is needed, or if an arrest is warranted, we will do it."

Caloocan City Police Chief Police Colonel Samuel Mina Jr. confirmed that Castillo was apprehended the following day and has been disarmed and placed in the custody of the Caloocan City Police Station.

The police are preparing to file charges against the officer for Illegal Discharge of Firearm. Castillo will also face an administrative investigation that could lead to his dismissal from the police service.

Aberin's statement served as a stern warning to the entire NCRPO. "This serves as a warning to all members of the NCRPO that if there are abuses happening on the ground, we will not tolerate them and we will take immediate action," he said.

The police chief underscored the severity of the offense, stating that Castillo’s actions could lead to two possible outcomes: "It’s either they get separated from the service or they get jailed."

The incident is a reminder of the PNP's commitment to internal discipline and the continuous effort to extract rogue elements within its ranks.
