According to Lieutenant Colonel Roden Orbon, spokesperson for the Philippine Army's 6th Infantry Division, the gun battle was between two families.

The first was the family of Sukor Guiamalon, an armed member of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).

The opposing group was led by Mohamad Tatak, who serves as the village chairman of Barangay Sapakan.

The hostilities began after Guiamalon discovered that his 15-year-old daughter had eloped with the younger brother of Chairman Tatak.

This act of elopement, a sensitive issue in traditional communities, escalated quickly into an armed confrontation between the two families.

The sound of gunfire echoed through the village, raising fears of a protracted conflict.

Recognizing the gravity of the situation, officials from the Philippine Army's 33rd Infantry Battalion were deployed to the area.

Instead of engaging in combat, the military officers, led by their battalion commander, acted as peace brokers.

They swiftly initiated talks with both parties, emphasizing the need for de-escalation and a non-violent resolution.
