AGAP Representative Nicanor Briones explained that he was not placing bets on e-sabong after being seen watching a cockfight video during a session at the House of Representatives.
Briones said he only opened a video message that someone sent to him and looked at it briefly.
He defended himself by saying he has never gone to a cockfighting arena in his life and does not even know how to use online money transfers, which are usually needed for e-sabong betting.
He added that the voting session was very long, and someone simply sent him a message during that time.

Briones also said he felt embarrassed, especially to House Speaker Martin Romualdez, because the issue may give the wrong impression about Congress.
He apologized and faced the public to clear his name, saying he did not want to damage the image of the House.
It can be recalled that prior to this news, a congressman was reportedly seen watching e-sabong on his cellphone during the opening of the 20th Congress.
This happened while the voting for the new House Speaker was taking place.
The lawmaker’s identity has not been confirmed as he was facing away from the camera.
The viral post on social media got thousands of reactions, comments, and memes.
The photo of the lawmaker received heavy criticism after he was reportedly caught watching e-sabong on his cellphone during the opening of the 20th Congress on Monday, July 28.
According to a report by The Philippine STAR on Tuesday, July 29, he was seen during the voting session for the next House Speaker.
