The brutal attack occurred on the evening of June 20, around 10:22 p.m., in Barangay Pitogo, Taguig.

Villaruel, who worked as a maintenance employee, was reportedly seated outside his home with several other individuals when an assailant, identified by Taguig police as 43-year-old Gregorio, a machine operator residing in Quezon City, suddenly appeared.

Driven by a motive believed to be jealousy, Gregorio allegedly poured gasoline on Villaruel, ignited it, and then fled the scene.

The entire shocking incident was reportedly captured on closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage.

Villaruel's death was announced by his grieving family members, including his mother, Jean Garmino, and his aunt, Bhabie Garmino, through heartfelt posts on social media.

"Toto James Garmino i miss you so much nak," Jean Garmino shared on Facebook, expressing her profound sorrow.
His aunt, Bhabie Garmino, penned a poignant message, highlighting his courageous fight for survival: "Toto James Garmino alam nman naming lumaban k e, peru hanggang dito k nlng tlga. Wag mung patulugin yung gumawa sayo niyan, hayop siya kriminal. Ok lang yan to no more pain, fly high to ok lang kami dito always ka nmin maalala love n love ka nmin alam mu yan. RIP pamangkin fly high. I love you always James Garmino."

Her words reflect the family's immense pain and their desperate plea for justice.

Throughout his month-long hospitalization, Villaruel faced an arduous battle against the extensive burns that covered his body.

The financial burden on his family was also immense, with his hospital bill reportedly reaching a staggering P1 million, as revealed in a July 19 social media post by a relative.

Authorities in Taguig City have been actively pursuing Gregorio since the incident, but as of the latest reports, the suspect remains at large.

The police are urging anyone with information regarding Gregorio's whereabouts to come forward to assist in his immediate apprehension.

This tragic development underscores the critical need to bring the perpetrator to justice, not only for Villaruel's family but also to ensure accountability for such a heinous act of violence in the community.

The ongoing manhunt continues as police intensify their efforts to track down and arrest the individual responsible for this brutal attack.
