The murder of Segovia brings renewed focus on the safety of journalists in the Philippines, a recurring national concern.

Undersecretary Torres affirmed the government's commitment, stating, "The safety of journalists remains a priority for the government, and justice for victims of media-related violence continues to be a national concern."

Authorities are urging the public and the media community to remain vigilant and to provide any information that could aid the ongoing investigation, ensuring that those responsible for this violent act are swiftly brought to justice.

News, photos, or videos that arouse the interest of netizens would often go viral on social media, due to the attention netizens give them. These viral posts appeal to the emotions of netizens, and in rare cases, this could also happen to ordinary people, making them very relatable stories.

It can be recalled that radio broadcaster Erwin Segovia, 63, was shot dead outside Radio WOW in Bislig City after hosting his morning show. Authorities said Segovia discussed “social issues, local governance, and community concerns,” and two motorcycle-riding suspects were seen fleeing. The Philippines has recorded 147 journalist killings since 1998, making it one of the most dangerous countries for media workers. Few suspects in journalist killings are ever prosecuted, with most victims based in provinces where they risk offending powerful figures.
