Herohito Sungcuan, 70, reportedly traveled from Manila to Mangaldan, Pangasinan, to confront his brother-in-law about the latter's alleged history of assaulting his wife, Sungcuan's sister, particularly when intoxicated.
However, the attempt at reconciliation turned into an attack, with Sungcuan becoming the latest victim of his brother-in-law's aggression.
According to a report from GMA Regional TV One North Central Luzon, the incident occurred recently, culminating in Sungcuan sustaining a stab wound to the abdomen.
He was immediately rushed to a local hospital where he reportedly underwent surgery for his injuries.
Sources close to the family revealed that Sungcuan had returned to Mangaldan specifically to address the ongoing issue of his sister being subjected to physical abuse by her husband whenever the latter consumed alcohol.
Other siblings of the victim had also reportedly witnessed the suspect's violent behavior towards his wife.
After Sungcuan allegedly advised his brother-in-law regarding the abusive conduct, the suspect reportedly became intoxicated.
It was during this state that he allegedly retaliated by stabbing Sungcuan in the stomach. The unexpected turn of events shocked the family, who did not anticipate that the suspect would extend his violence to Sungcuan.
The victim's sister, for whom Sungcuan had intervened, expressed profound gratitude and concern for her brother.
"Nagpapasalamat ako sa kuya ko kasi talagang mahal niya ako. Siya ang panganay namin, para na namin siyang tatay. Ang gusto ko lang, gumaling siya," she tearfully stated.
Another sibling recounted the terrifying aftermath, revealing threats made by the suspect. "Nalasing na naman siya tapos akala namin hindi niya gagawin ‘to, parang lumala yata. Tapos nagbabanta siya na ako ang isusunod niya," the other sister disclosed.
Following the incident, the suspect voluntarily surrendered to the police. Authorities have since filed charges of frustrated hom1cide against him.
While in police custody, the suspect reportedly did not issue a formal statement to the media but expressed remorse for his actions and sought forgiveness from both his wife and his brother-in-law.
The Mangaldan Police are conducting a thorough investigation into the incident, which underscores the grave dangers associated with domestic disputes and the courageous, yet sometimes perilous, efforts of family members to intervene.
The case serves as a somber reminder of the need for effective mechanisms to address domestic violence and ensure the safety of all individuals involved.
Sungcuan remains under medical care, with his family holding onto hope for his full recovery and the swift administration of justice.
