The woman was apprehended based on an outstanding warrant of arrest linked to the purported fraudulent activities that reportedly occurred in 2020.
The arrest follows a complaint filed by her former employer, who suspected the cashier of repeatedly siphoning funds from the store.
According to Police Lieutenant Alexander Manalo, chief of the Malabon Police Warrant and Subpoena Section, the alleged scheme involved transactions with her then-colleagues.
"‘Yung mga kasamahan niya, kapag magpa-punch, bibili ng produkto galing sa supermarket, siya bilang kahera, hindi niya pina-punch lahat ng produkto," Lieutenant Manalo explained. "At pagkatapos nilang masagawa 'yung mali nilang ginagawa, sa kanila paghahati-hatian 'yung proceeds ng mga ninakaw nila."
Authorities detailed that this alleged modus operandi was carried out on five separate occasions, spanning different times within 2020.
The repeated nature of the reported offenses led to the formal charges being filed against her.
Information from law enforcement indicates that the accused had reportedly traveled to Saudi Arabia to work as a domestic helper after the alleged incidents but before the warrant for her arrest was issued.
She eventually returned to the Philippines in 2023. Police received intelligence regarding her return, which ultimately led to her apprehension at her residence in Barangay Tonsuya, Malabon.
The former cashier now faces five counts of qualified theft, a charge that carries more severe penalties due to the circumstances of the alleged crime, such as abuse of trust.
She is currently detained at the Malabon City Police Station, awaiting further legal proceedings.
When approached for a statement regarding the allegations, the accused declined to comment. "Paumanhin po sa inyo, hindi ko po masasagot ang inyong mga katanungan po. Sa korte ko na lamang po siya sasagutin."
This case underscores the challenges businesses face with internal theft and the importance of stringent financial controls.
Retail establishments often implement various measures, including regular audits and surveillance, to prevent and detect such fraudulent activities.
The ongoing legal process will determine the veracity of the allegations and the extent of the former cashier's involvement in the reported multi-instance theft.
