Meanwhile, 17 passengers of the van were injured, including 15 minors who were basketball players.
They were supposed to play for the Mindanao Youth Basketball League. The injured victims are still recovering from their injuries.
The Mindanao Youth Basketball League (MYBL), officially known as the Liga Mindanao Youth Basketball League (LMYBL), is a regional grassroots tournament for young athletes aged 12 and 15, and in some editions, 18 and under.
Launched in Cagayan de Oro in July 2019 by the Manny V. Pangilinan Sports Foundation in partnership with Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas and local government units, the league aims to provide exposure and development opportunities for Mindanao’s basketball talent.
Teams from Cagayan de Oro, Bukidnon, Iligan, and Misamis Oriental have competed in league games aimed at fostering player growth and unity across the region.
By late 2020, organizers had formed MYBL tournaments for 12-under and 16-under categories across Mindanao, with support from experienced coaches, many of them former professional players, as well as local officials.
Their goal was to establish the league as Mindanao’s premier youth basketball competition, offering a valuable platform for young athletes to develop skills, build friendships, and potentially advance to international competitions.
