Surveillance footage from a nearby CCTV camera captured the critical moments of the attack. The footage shows the victim positioned with her back to the road when two individuals, riding in tandem on a motorcycle, approached from behind.
The backrider then discharged a firearm, striking the woman, before the assailants quickly fled the scene.
The victim collapsed immediately after being shot. Her live-in partner, who is also a barangay tanod, along with another barangay tanod, bravely pursued the fleeing suspects.
During the pursuit, the assailants reportedly fired additional shots. The victim’s live-in partner sustained a gunshot wound to the knee, while the other tanod suffered a graze wound to the chest.
Despite immediate efforts to provide aid, the 30-year-old woman was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.
A barangay official confirmed that she sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the nape of her neck.
Authorities are currently working to establish the identity of the suspects and the motive behind the killing.
At this stage of the investigation, the barangay officials have stated they are unaware of any specific motive for the crime.
It was also clarified that the victim was not listed on any local drug watch list, ruling out a common initial line of inquiry in such cases.
The victim’s family has, as of the report, declined to provide a statement to the media, respecting their privacy during this difficult time.
The Manila Police District is intensely focusing on several key angles as they piece together the circumstances surrounding the attack.
A significant point of inquiry is whether the backrider who fired the fatal shot was female, as well as exploring the possibility of a “love triangle” as a potential motive for the crime.
Riding-in-tandem shootings continue to be a persistent concern in urban centers like Manila, with law enforcement agencies constantly implementing measures to combat these swift and often fatal attacks.
