A 72-year-old man tragically died in a fire that broke out on Friday night, May 3, in Santa Mesa, Manila.

According to a report by 24 Oras Weekend on Saturday, the victim had reportedly been drinking before he fell asleep and was unable to escape when the fire erupted.

The victim’s wife shared that their grandchild attempted to wake him up and rescue him during the blaze.

The elderly man allegedly opened his eyes but was too weak to get up, ultimately succumbing to the fire.

The blaze affected six houses and reached the second alarm before it was finally extinguished past 10 p.m.

The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) estimates the damage to be around ₱250,000.

As a result of the fire, around 80 residents have been displaced and are temporarily staying at the barangay’s daycare center while awaiting further assistance and relocation support.

The BFP is still investigating the cause of the fire. Authorities continue to remind the public to take extra precautions, especially when handling flammable materials and electrical appliances, particularly in residential areas with closely built structures.

This tragic incident has once again highlighted the vulnerability of the elderly during emergencies and the importance of fire safety awareness in communities.

The local government and relief agencies are currently coordinating efforts to provide aid to the affected families.

The OFW father of the girl victim personally took his daughter's remains and will be bringing them to Lipa City, Batangas.
