The modern jeepney terminal in Barangay Sta. Cruz, Antipolo, Rizal, became the scene of a fatal shooting early Wednesday morning, April 23, 2025, claiming the life of a 55-year-old driver just as he was starting his day.

Identified by colleagues as a man of amiable character, the driver was waiting within the terminal when a lone assailant ended his life.

Surveillance footage from the terminal captured the grim sequence of events. A figure wearing a helmet and a facemask, with a hand concealed, entered the area where the driver was seated.

Another camera angle showed the victim occupied with his mobile phone at a table, unaware of the impending danger.

The suspect is then seen approaching the driver, pausing briefly to look at his face before firing a fatal shot. The driver slumped in his seat, while the shooter immediately fled the terminal.

Authorities were alerted to the incident by terminal staff shortly after 3:00 AM. The Philippine National Police (PNP) and Barangay Public Safety Officers were quick to respond.

Merlinda Armas, the Barangay Sta. Cruz secretary, reported that upon arrival, first responders found the victim already being moved and bearing fatal gunshot wounds.

Initial findings from the PNP investigation suggest a possible prior dispute between the victim and the suspect.

Further investigation through the terminal’s CCTV system revealed that the assailant, accompanied by another individual on a motorcycle, had arrived from the direction of Masinag.

After the shooting, the pair reportedly used the same route to escape back towards Masinag, indicating a coordinated effort with a getaway driver.

The impact of this tragedy has been deeply felt by the victim's colleagues. One fellow driver, who was present at the terminal along with a dispatcher when the shooting occurred, recounted the terrifying moments after being awakened by the sound of gunfire.

In a statement filled with grief and disbelief, the colleague emphasized the victim's kind nature, stating that he was a well-liked and long-standing member of their community, having worked at the terminal since the era of traditional jeepneys.

“Total shock po talaga kasi ako galing pa sa itaas napababa po talaga rito. Wala naman po problema sa pag-uugali niya at since traditional jeepney pa po andito na siya. Sana po mahuli na. Mamatay na siya. Masyadong brutal 'yung ginawa niya. Pinapaubaya na po namin sa mga pulis,” Yap’s colleague said.

The overwhelming sentiment among his peers is one of shock and a strong desire for justice, with fervent calls for the swift capture and punishment of the perpetrator of this brutal act.

They are also gathering testimonies from potential witnesses and pursuing all possible leads to determine the motive behind this senseless act of violence against a man remembered by his colleagues for his kindness and good nature.

In other news, Mayor Joel Ruma of Rizal, Cagayan was fatally shot during a campaign rally on April 23. Police suspect a sniper using a caliber 5.56 Armalite rifle was responsible for the attack , ABS-CBN noted. Investigators recovered a single shell casing from a possible sniper vantage point near the scene. The PNP is continuing its investigation to identify suspects and determine the motive behind the killing.

Still in other news, an 80-year-old independent mayoralty candidate of Zamboanga City was found dead inside his home. Orlando San Luis Negrete, was discovered lifeless decaying body in his home after days of no contact. Police estimated that he has been dead for about four days before his body was found. According to Brigada News PH, members of the Mindanao militia, which Negrete led, visited his home and alerted his family after noticing a foul odor, which led to the discovery of his body.
