It wasn’t clear if the said “Sir” is one of the teachers in the school, a guest, or one of the parents.

The controversy erupted when Principal Nietes reportedly instructed graduating students to remove their togas and proceed across the stage in their school uniforms paired only with the traditional “sablay.”

The incident, which unfolded on what should have been a celebratory milestone for the students, sparked immediate reactions and discussions, particularly on social media platforms.

According to a widely circulated Facebook post, the man, described as a “Sir in gold,” took it upon himself to question Principal Nietes’ decision.

He argued that graduation is a significant occasion deserving of the traditional academic regalia. Despite his appeal, the Principal Nietes’ directive reportedly stood, leaving many students to ascend the stage without their togas.

The Facebook post that brought the incident to wider attention also expressed disappointment over the principal's decision, suggesting that students should have been granted the autonomy to choose whether or not they wished to wear a toga for their graduation.

The post emphasized that high school graduation is a once-in-a-lifetime event and a tangible symbol of their academic achievements throughout their years of schooling.

Following the initial reports, it appears that the sentiment expressed in the viral post resonated deeply with the graduating students.

Multiple accounts and comments circulating online suggest widespread disappointment and a feeling that a significant aspect of their graduation experience was diminished by the principal's order.

Many students reportedly viewed the toga as a visual representation of their hard work and dedication in completing their secondary education.

The decision to forgo togas reportedly caught many students and their families by surprise, leading to a sense of anticlimax on a day that was meant to be filled with pride and celebration.

The contrast between the students' expectations of a traditional graduation ceremony, complete with academic gowns, and the reality of being asked to remove them just before receiving their diplomas has become a focal point of discussion within the school community and beyond.

While the exact reasoning behind Principal Nietes’ decision was not immediately clear from the initial reports, subsequent information suggests it may be linked to the Department of Education's (DepEd) emphasis on austerity measures for graduation ceremonies.

The intention behind such guidelines is often to make graduation more accessible and affordable for all families, discouraging excessive spending on elaborate events and attire.

However, the implementation of these guidelines at CRANS, particularly the timing and the perceived lack of flexibility, has clearly struck a nerve with the graduating class.

News, photos or videos that arouse the interest of netizens would often go viral on social media, due to the attention netizens give them. These viral posts appeal to the emotions of netizens, and in rare cases, such could also happen to ordinary people, making them very relatable to just about simply everyone around.

In related news, the Schools Division Office of Antique is now looking into the controversial incident at Col. Ruperto Abellon National School (CRANS). It can be recalled that the principal of CRANS ordered the removal of togas being worn by students on the day of the End-of-School-Year (EOSY) rites citing DepEd guidelines. The unexpected directive reportedly upset students and parents who viewed togas as symbolic, with some of those in attendance calling out the principal loudly for her decision. DepEd guarantees diplomas and certificates will be released despite the incident.
