Tragedy struck in Sitio Layangan, Barangay Salayan, Matalam, North Cotabato on April 9, when a one-year-old boy died after being attacked by a diamond snake.

The victim, identified as Baby Jared James, was left momentarily at home around 3:00 p.m. by his grandmother, who stepped out briefly to get food.
Upon returning, she was horrified to hear a loud thud and discover a snake coiled around the baby’s head.
Panicked, the grandmother attempted to remove the snake but was met with resistance as the reptile fought back.

Unable to handle the situation on her own, she rushed to seek help from neighbors.
Together, they managed to subdue and kill the snake using a locally crafted firearm known as a "de bomba."
The infant was immediately rushed to the nearest hospital. However, despite efforts to save him, Baby Jared James succumbed to the effects of the attack.
Medical personnel confirmed he had sustained six snake bites to the head.
The boy was laid to rest shortly afterward in accordance with Islamic burial traditions.
The heartbreaking incident has shaken the local community and serves as a grim reminder of the dangers posed by wildlife in rural areas.
Authorities are advising residents to remain vigilant, especially when leaving young children unattended, and to take extra precautions to prevent similar tragedies.
Local officials are also looking into potential safety measures to minimize the risk of snake encounters in residential areas.

According to the report of Balitanghali of GMA Integrated News, the victim was driving a tricycle. A man at the roadside then signaled for him to stop, and when he did, he was shot by the perpetrator. The gunman immediately fled the scene, but authorities already have a person of interest.
