The incident, which unfolded on a Monday afternoon, appears to have been a coordinated effort to extract a high-profile Chinese inmate who was being transported back to the Parañaque City Jail following a court hearing in Makati City.

According to Police Colonel Melvin Montante, the chief of Parañaque Police, the BJMP van was en route from Makati Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 235, where the Chinese inmate had attended a hearing for a carnapping case filed in Makati City.

As the BJMP vehicle was traveling along Cavitex around 12:20 PM, it was intercepted by two vehicles.

“Based on the information provided to us ng Paranaque BJMP, itong PDL nila from Paranaque City Jail ay dinala nila sa Makati, that morning, kasi may inaattendan na court hearing. From there pabalik sana sila sa City jail, 12:20pm, doon sila hinarangan ng 2 motor vehicles,” stated Colonel Montante.

A confrontation ensued between the four BJMP officers who were escorting the inmate and the occupants of the two vehicles that blocked them.

During the exchange, one of the jail officers sustained a gunshot wound to his right shoulder and was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.

While one of the vehicles involved in the ambush managed to evade capture, the second vehicle, a Mitsubishi Expander, crashed into a tree near the Parañaque Wetland Park while attempting to flee.

This crash led to the immediate apprehension of the vehicle's occupants.

“Our operation conducted 12:20 right after the call from 911 central and after 2-3 minutes there was a call also from BJMP Paranaque, saying there was a shooting incident that transpired dito bandang after ng paglagpas ng toll gate sa Cavitex,” Colonel Montante explained.
“Ang inabot namin doon sa area is yung sasakyan ng BJMP na may tama, at yung Mitsubishi Expander,” he added.

Inside the crashed vehicle, Parañaque police operatives arrested six individuals: two Chinese nationals and four Filipinos.

Further investigation revealed that these individuals were allegedly attempting to escape towards the Laguna de Bay area.

Police investigation indicates that the ambush was a deliberate attempt to free the Chinese inmate who was being transported in the BJMP van.

Authorities have learned that the arrested Chinese suspects are believed to be associates of the inmate and are all allegedly members of a criminal syndicate involved in a string of serious offenses, including kidnapping, carnapping, and illegal firearms and drug traffick1ng.

“The purpose of this extrication, para irescue nila itong suspek as their boss. Then the 4 Filipinos, nagamit lang and they will pay P25,000 each after,” Colonel Montante disclosed.

The Chinese inmate has a history of involvement in various high-profile crimes.

“He is a Chinese national, involved in a series of activity, particularly, kidnapping, extortion, carnapping, gun running. Last 2022 ay kidnapping, 2023 ay carnapping naman, same sa Makati, kaya may hearing siya kanina, that transpired last year, involved siya sa road rage,” added Colonel Montante.

The Chinese suspects reportedly refused to give any statements to the police, claiming they did not understand English.

However, one of the Filipino suspects admitted their involvement in the crime, stating that they were instructed to wait in the back while the Chinese suspects would take their boss.

The other three Filipino suspects, identified as cousins, also declined to provide any statements.

As of the latest reports, the BJMP has yet to issue an official statement regarding the ambush.

The arrested suspects are currently detained at the Parañaque City Police headquarters and are facing a multitude of charges, including frustrated and attempted murder, violation of Republic Act 10591 (Illegal Possession of Firearms and Ammunition), violation of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drug$ Act, and violation of the Omnibus Election Code.

The swift action of the Parañaque police in apprehending the suspects has been commended, but the incident raises serious questions about the security protocols for transporting high-risk inmates.
